Seventh Grade Classes

Art ~ Full Credit ~ Required

Junior high Art classes meet once a week and are required of al students. This class is an in introduction to Discipline Based Art Education. The students work in both two dimensional (drawing and painting) and three dimensional (clay/ceramics) media. We study the processes of Visual Art and are exposed to several different media. Learning the concept of Creativity encompasses all that is studied at this level.

English ~ Full Credit ~ Required

Students are introduced to various genre of literature: Short story, novel, drama, poetry, folk tale, etc. The study of spelling incorporates the patterns in our language. Several novels are read outside of classtime for discussion, composition and testing purposes. Other novels are done by the class as a whole with chapter by chapter analysis. Grammar study consists of the parts of speech and the parts of a sentence. A 70% average must be maintained from homework, quizzes, tests, and special projects.

Life Science ~ Full Credit ~ Required

Life Science is a general overview course of the life sciences. It is designed to provide a working knowledge of the basic biological topics such as botany, zoology, anatomy and physiology, cell biology, ecology, genetics, and evolution. A special project associated with this class is an insect collection which is required of all students. This course is intended to provide background information which will be further enhanced in sophomore biology.

Seventh grade Math reviews and reinforces students grasp of basic operations involving whole numbers, decimal numbers, fractions and mixed numbers. The concept of percent and operations with percents and perimeter of a polygon are also introduced. A variety of hands-on activities are used throughout the year. Evaluation is based on homework and tests.

The course is divided into 8 units of study. They are: Physchology, Sociology, Anthropology, History, Government, Geography, Economics, and the Future. This Course is designed to give the students a basic background in the various Social Science disciplines.

Theology ~ Full Credit ~ Required

The focus of Seventh Grade Theology is to help the student arrive at a Christian/Catholic interpretation of life's experiences as they explore the fundamentals of their faith--Jesus Christ, prayer and worship, scripture, morality and church. A notebook is needed to record class discussions, some homework, and personal reflections. Grades are figured on homework, classroom experiences in cooperative learning, art work and classroom discussion.

Seventh grade General Music consists of learning basic music theory, notes, rhythms, and pitches. The main emphasis is on singing and reading and following music. Other areas covered include types of instruments, styles of music, and modern day uses of classical music.

Junior High Band ~ Half Credit ~ Elective

The Jr. High Band is generally a performance based course. The band members will begin to see how the basics learned in fifth and sixth grade band can be expanded. Seventh graders especially will have the opportunity to drastically improve skills by learning "a whole bunch of new music". Eighth graders will develop leadership abilities by fine-tuning music previously learned. The Jr. High Band will be required to play with Sr. High Band at least half the pep band performances in conjunction with varsity athletic events.

Junior High Swing Choir ~ Half Credit ~ Elective

Jr. High Swing Choir meets twice weekly during the school day. The class is primarily a performance based course, with required performances at all three annual school concerts. The emphasis of the class is on singing in two or three part harmony with many days spent on learning choreography. Small groups and solos may be a part of jr. high swing choir if there is extra time.

Students will be expected to purchase a swing choir outfit which might cost in the $25 range. Every effort will be made to keep the cost reasonable. Acceptance into the group is by audition.

Art ~ Full Credit ~ Required

This class is an extension of 7th grade Art. The students will review all that was learned in the earlier grade and gain an expanded knowledge of Art. This class is also Discipline Based. The work will again be in both two and three dimensions. The students will show a more mature, if only slightly, approach to the Creative Process.

Earth Science ~ Full Credit ~ Required

The bell curve is utilized in the evaluation of students in this class. This encourages top students to work hard to achieve an A while not frustrating those who might struggle for passing grades. Students are required to keep a notebook (which is graded) to very specific standards for each unit.

Major projects for the year include The Science Fair (25% of third quarter grade) and a Nebraska Topographical Map presentation which is 10% of the second quarter grade. The eighth grade also participates in the testing and interviewing project activity sponsored by the University of Nebraska Medical School. Field trips include the Waste Water Treatment Plant, the Weather Station, and the Hastings Museum.

Earth Science is an introductory course which looks at the tools of science: measurement, scales, graphing, data tables, maps and models etc. The course emphasizes deductive reasoning by using many lab activities and projects. Student will develop skills in interpreting Earthquakes, Plate Tectonics, Geologic Time, Minerals, Rocks, Weather, Glaciers, Chemistry, Landforms and Space.

The study of various literary genres continues. Folk tale emphasis includes Greek mythology, the Trojan War, and Arthurian legend. Some novels are analyzed by chapter by the class. Others are read outside of class for testing, discussion, and composition purposes. A writing journal develops the use of various types of paragraphs and topic sentences. Separate vocabulary study begins. Grammar study centers on the parts of a sentence, clauses and phrases, and usage rules. A 70% average must be maintained from homework, quizzes, tests and special projects.

Geography ~ Full Credit ~ Required

This course is a combination of world cultural geography, and some physical geography. Some of the units studied are: Geography and Its Tools, Energy in the World, Population, Food and Farming, Climate and Vegetation, Europe, Asia, Australia and Oceanania, The Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and the United States and Canada.

History ~ Full Credit ~ Required

This course is different from most history courses in it does not use the timeline approach in order to study American History. Rather, the course chooses some major units and develops them. The units taught are rather broad. This gives the teacher flexibility in developing units of study. The first unit of study is the formation of the U.S. Government. This is a nine week study that studies the constitutional process in detail up to the War of 1812. The second unit of study looks at the rise of industry in the U.S in the Colonial Period, the time period from the signing of the Constitution up to the Civil War and the Industrial Revolution. The third unit is called, "The Good Times and the Bad Times." This unit explores the Progressive Era, the 1920's and the Great Depression. The last unit is "The World at War." In this unit major wars are studied one by one, allowing the student to compare and contrast the various conflicts to see similarities and differences.

Eighth Grade Math consists of a strong review of basic operations involving whole numbers, decimal numbers, fractions, mixed numbers and percent. Area, volume, and perimeter are emphasized heavily. Solving equations is also practiced throughout the year. Many hands-on activities are utilized. Evaluation is based on homework and tests. Students successfully completing this class have a strong foundation for Algebra I.

Theology ~ Full Credit ~ Required

As adolescents grow and change, they prepare for life as adults. This class is designed to show them that a Christian faith can help them in this growth by teaching them to live in harmony with God, nature, themselves and others. Emphasis includes having respect for laws, the rights of others and ourselves. A notebook is required to record class discussions, some homework, and personal reflections. Grades are based upon homework, classroom experiences in cooperative learning and classroom discussions.

Eighth grade General Music is mainly a music history class. The styles of music from the early Renaissance to music today are discussed in detail. A continuation of the music reading skills acquired in seventh grade along with basic harmonization with two or more voices are studied.

Spanish ~ Half Credit ~ Required

Introduction to Spanish gives the student an opportunity to hear, repeat, and understand spoken Spanish. In addition the student begins to write and spell in Spanish. Students learn basic information about the language such as alphabet, numbers, colors, greetings, farewells, nouns, verbs and miscellaneous vocabulary. Culture is also introduced.

Algebra I - Full Credit - Required

Algebra I includes such topics as working with real numbers, solving equations, factoring polynomials, polynomial arithmetic, algebraic fractions, graphing linear equations, functions, inequalities, radicals and solving quadratic equations. General mastery of junior high math would be needed to recommend this class. Two years of math are required for graduation. Evaluation is based upon tests and and homework.

English ~ Full Credit ~ Required

The curriculum in this class is based upon grammatical knowledge gained in the previous two years with emphasis on the correct use of the language. It includes irregular verbs, pronouns, modifiers, sentence completeness, etc. Class members also study vocabulary on a weekly basis which invloves the use of synonyms, antonyms, roots, prefixes, suffixes, derivatives, and word usage in context. Literature includes the study of poetry, short stories, drama and novels. A 70% average is needed to pass based upon homework, quizzes, tests and an autobiography written by the student.

Physical Science ~ Full Credit ~ Required

Physical Science is designed as a general overview course. The topics discussed include motion, energy, waves, light, electricity, magnetism, heat, matter, atomic theory, chemical changes, formulas, and reactions. Physical Science serves as a good basis for future science courses including Chemistry and Physics as well as a terminal course for those students who do not choose to pursue further study in those areas. Two years of science are required for graduation.

Theology ~ Full Credit ~ Required

Class this year is a study of the seven Sacraments. Symbol and ritual are emphasized as used in worship. A weekly Wintercount is required of each student (a symbol of the most important event in the student's week). Grades are determined from tests, homework, and art activities. A short unit on AIDS is also presented and periodically there are discussions using Catholic Youth Update's current topics. Much emphasis is placed on daily work and appropriate behavior during discussion. Service to others is an important part of the expectation of Theology class and is a component in the student evaluation.

World History ~ Full Credit ~ Required

World History is designed to acquaint the student with the history of people, the early civilizations, countries and forces which have shaped the world. Units covered include early civilizations, Middle Ages I/II, Protestant Reformation, the Renaissance, Rise of Major Nations, And French Revolution. A major project is required every quarter. One day per week is devoted to current events and a World News Map quiz. Homwork, maps, and projects account for 50% of the grade with tests and quizzes constituting the remaining 50%.

Areas of emphasis include personal hygiene, mental health, drug abuse, first aid, sexually transmitted diseases, and the body structure. Grading is based upon homework and test scores.

Freshman Physical Education will consist of several activities including team sports, soccer, touch football, volleyball, basketball, and ragball. Tournaments in each team sport will be held (intramural). Individual activities include gymnastics, shuffleboard, badminton, and strength training. Grading is based upon participation, behavior and skill.

Freshman Speech I is a preparatory course for advanced speech. Students are required to deliver numerous speeches. The main objective is to assist students in feeling comfortable in front of a group of people. Students will be filmed at one point of the year. Topics vary from speech to speech. Grading is based on daily work and speeches.

Spanish I ~ Full Credit ~ Elective

Spanish I emphasizes basic Spanish for students to be able to satisfy immediate survival needs and minimum courtesy requirements with fair grammatical accuracy according to the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines on speaking, listening, reading and writing. Emphasis is on vocabulary. Hispanic culture is incorporated in all aspects of the course.

Class requirements for students include participating orally in class discussions, completion of all homework assignments, listening to audio tapes which accompany each chapter, and successful completion of both written and oral tests. 40% of the student's evaluation is based upon written quizzes and tests, 30% upon homework, and 30% upon oral testing.

Art ~ Half Credit ~ Elective

Freshmen Art is the beginning study of all of the Visual Art Elements and principles. The class will again study Art through the application of Discipline Based Art Education. The study of Art History will be introduced at this level. The students will be introduced to the Potters Wheel and centering a ball of clay. Each student will create Artworks in drawing, painting, and clay. At this level creativity is the basis for all the artwork.

Band ~ Half Credit ~ Elective

Band is mainly a performance-based course. It is essential that students registered for this course be willing to attend games at which the pep band plays. During the course of the school year, students will participate in pep band, concert band as well as having the opportunity to work in small groups and solos. Band presently is scheduled to begin promptly at 8:00 a.m. and students are expected to be on time. Experience in junior high band or the equivalent would seem prudent for membership in senior high band.

Chorus deals with the basic principles of singing and gives students an excellent opportunity to do a lot of "part"-singing. Chorus is a performance based course with small group and solo work for contest available as part of the class. Requirements to receive credit include participation, positive attitude and attendance at all performances. Chorus is scheduled a few minutes earlier than the regular school day and promptness is asked.

Swing Choir ~ No Credit ~ Extracurricular

Swing Choir is an extracurricular activity. From auditions in the spring, a group of singers (approximately 20) are selected. Students are responsible for paying for Swing Choir outfit. Swing Choir meets after school on Monday, Wednesday and Friday until 4:00 p.m. with an occasional Sunday night rehearsal. The emphasis in on singing, dancing, and being able to "get along" as a group. Swing Choir performs at all three annual school concerts, two contests and a spring tour along with various other private functions. Enrollment in chorus is a prerequisite to membership in Swing Choir. Swing Choir is open to students grades 9-12.

Biology ~ Full Credit ~ Required

Topics covered during the year will be: The Nature of Science; An Introduction to Bio-Chemistry; Cell Structure, Function and Energy; Nucleic Acids and Protein Synthesis; Cell Growth and Division; Genetics, including genes, chromosomes, human heredity and the ethics of genetic engineering; The Evolution and Origin of Life; Human Reproduction; Classification; The Five Kingdoms; Monera, Protists, Fungi, Plants, and Animals.

This is a lab science class. Extensive microscope work and dissection is required with accompanying write-up. Nightly homework and three or four research projects are required. For instance, in the first quarter a detailed leaf and plant collection is made, and in the second quarter a research paper on a current science topic is written using correct form and submitted to the Dupont Essay Challenge.

Evaluation is based as follows: 45% homework, 25% lab work, and tests equaling 30%. Special projects may be substituted and weighted at approximately 10-15% of the final grade. Two years of science are required for graduation.

Geometry - Full Credit - Required

Geometry is the study of the relationship of points, lines, and planes in planes and space. Topics introduced throughout the course are parallel lines, congruent and similar figures, and circles. Area and volume as well as consatruction and loci are studied. Evaluation is based upon homework and tests. Successful completion of Algebra would serve as a prerequisite for Geometry. Two years of Math are required for graduation.

General Math - Full Credit - Required General Math is devoted to the mastery of the use of fractions, mixed numbers and decimal numbers in the four basic operations of arithmetic. More abstract topics are introduced following this arithmetic section. Students who successfully complete this course will be prepared for Algebra I as well as consumer, technical or vocational math courses. Two years of math are required for graduation. Evaluation is based upon tests and homework.

Theology ~ Full Credit ~ Required

The sophomore scripture class is an overview of both the Old and New Testaments. Bible Events are studied in the light of context, science and biblical truth. Each student keeps a prayer journal and spends individual time on various readings from the Bible, reflecting on them in the prayer journal. A short unit on AIDS is implemented. Evaluation is based upon service hours, prayer journal, class participation and projects.

Typing ~ Full Credit ~ Required

Typing teaches the basics of typewriting. This includes proper spacing and machine control. Business elements include manuscripts, letters, and tabulations. Speed and accuracy are both stressed. Typing skills developed in this class will be used throughout the remaining years of school to complete reports and homework in most other classes. Both typewriters and Macintosh computers will be utilized.

Physical Education ~ Half Credit ~ Required

Sophomore Physical Education is a preparatory course for Recreational Sports. Activities include weightlifting, volleyball, basketball, bowling, ragball, and tennis. Students must provide their own gloves for ragball and fees for bowling. Grading is based upon participation, behavior and skill.

This High School Art Class is an advanced study of Art production. the class will study Color theory and be exposed to more historical Artwork. The class will be instructed on Throwing a Pot on the Wheel and learn to accomplish that task. Each student will be asked to start the process of identifying the medium best suited to his or her creative instincts in preparation for Junior Art.

Frontier History ~ Full Credit ~ Elective

The emphasis of Frontier History is on the USA west of the Mississippi River between the years 1800 and 1890. Topics studied include the Plains Indians, the Mountian Men, Gold Seekers, Cowboys, Pioneers, and the Railroaders, as well as judges, sheriffs, and outlaws of the "Old West."
The major objective of Frontier History is for the student to understand the special history of the Great Plains and how rich that history is in the North Platte area. One special activity which has been a highlight is the bus trip from North Platte to Scottsbluff tracing the Oregon Trail. It is a lot of fun!

Students are evaluated through tests and quizes and are required to submit a semester book report on topics being studied second semester.

American History ~ Full Credit ~ Required

American History 11 is designed to acquaint students with the eras of American history beginning with the exploration through the 1970's. In this study, the student will develop an appreciation of the our heritage, our Constitution and democracy. Activities include press conferences in which each student will be a president quized by reporters. Class is mainly lecture in format with visual materials accompanying each chapter. Each student will be required to write a research paper (Unipac) beginning in the first semester and ending at the end of the second semester. Evaluation is based upon homework, press conferences, tests, and the Unipac.

English 11 is a study of the history and development of various genre of American literature, from the Colonial Period up to and including the 20th Century. The purpose of Theology eleven is to help students develop a concept of morality. A strong emphasis is directed toward personal responsibility, sin, what it means to be human, human developement, and psychology. Daily homework assignments include essays, interviews and readings. Evaluation components include classroom discussion (50% of the grade), tests, quizzes, homework, special projects and essays.

Accounting I - Full Credit - Elective

Accounting I teaches the basic elements of bookkeeping using the general journal and general ledger and expands into the combination journal and subsidiary ledgers of a merchandising business. Students electing to take this class will be expected to READ every chapter and work a number of problems and drills. There is a great deal of writing involved in Accounting I but the work is not difficult for those who READ the book before attempting the problems.

There will be quizzes at the end of each chapter and a test at the end of each unit. There are also several projects included in the written assignments. Other than the willingness to learn Accounting, there are no prerequisites. Accounting requires common sense and logical thinking in a step-by-step manner through the problems presented.

Advanced Speech II - Full Credit - Elective

Advanced Speech II covers specific types of speeches with some drama techniques included. Contest work is required for the ultimate development of the individual. Algebra II - Full Credit - Elective

Algebra II offers a sound development of the structure of the real number system. The course includes discussions of number sentences, relations, linear and polynomial functions, trigonometry, sequences and series, probability, and matrices. Prerequisites for Algebra II would include Algebra I and Geometry. Evaluation is based upon test and homework.

Art class at this level is an Independent Study. The students will identify the art medium best suited to them individually and produce a comprehensive body of artwork. Each student will be evaluated on: work ethic, dedication to the creative process, and the aesthetics of the work. A student will have to be a self-starter to be successful at this level.

Chemistry ~ Full Credit ~ Elective

Chemistry is designed as a college preparation class for students interested in pursuing careers in biology, chemistry, engineering, and medicine. It is open only to incoming juniors with permission of the instructor. Successful completion of Algebra I, Geometry, and Biology I plus current enrollment in Algebra II would be expected.

The topics discussed in this course include classification of matter, chemical nomenclature, moles, chemical reactions, stochiometry, states of matter, acid-base relations and organic chemistry.

Students are expected to have the exclusive use of scientific calculator for this class, and to bring it with them to class every day. The purchase of a Texas Instruments model 30II is recommended.

Computer Applications - Full Credit - Elective

Computer Applications will expose the student to the use of the Macintosh computer program of Microsoft 3.0. The student will be taught the basic principles of the word processor, the data base and the spread sheet as well as the integration of these three elements. Typing I is the prerequisite course for Computer Applications.

In consumer math students improve their mathematics problem solving skills while getting an inside look at their role as consumers in American society. Topics covered include travel and tourism, the stock market, buyer preparation, consumer credit, personal income, and independent living. Evaluation is based upon homework and tests. Independent Music ~ Half Credit ~ Elective

This course is open to juniors and seniors. Scheduling is arranged with the instructor individually or with a small group. Work may be either vocal or instrumental, depending on the students preference. The student must meet eighty minutes or more per week with the instructor plus provide proof of additional practice time each week.

Students are required to perform a solo or small group at two of the three annual school concerts, to audition for All-State band or choir and to audition for UNK's honor band or choir. Students are required to do a solo for contests as well. Class time is spent working on individual projects.

Independent Music students must also be in either band or chorus in addition to independent work. Evaluation is based up quantity and quality of work, cooperation, and reliability.

Spanish III ~ Full Credit ~ Elective

Spanish III emphasizes basic Spanish for students to be able to satisfy survival needs easily, routine social demands, and limited work requirements. Emphasis is on speaking, listening, reading and writing proficiency according to ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines. Hispanic culture is incorporated in all aspects of the course.

Spanish II would be a prerequisite. Class requirements for students include participating orally in class discussions, completion of all homework assignments, listening to audio tapes which accompany each chapter, and successful completion of both written and oral tests. 40% of the student's evaluation is based upon written quizzes and tests, 30% upon homework, and 30% upon oral testing.

Band ~ Half Credit ~ Elective

Band is mainly a performance-based course. It is essential that students registered for this course be willing to attend games at which the pep band plays. During the course of the school year, students will participate in pep band, concert band as well as having the opportunity to work in small groups and solos. Band presently is scheduled to begin promptly at 8:00 a.m. and students are expected to be on time. Experience in junior high band or the equivalent would seem prudent for membership in senior high band.

Chorus deals with the basic principles of singing and gives students an excellent opportunity to do a lot of "part"-singing. Chorus is a performance based course with small group and solo work for contest available as part of the class. Requirements to receive credit include participation, positive attitude and attendance at all performances. Chorus is scheduled a few minutes earlier than the regular school day and promptness is asked.

Recreational Sports ~ Half Credit ~ Elective

Recreational Sports is offered to juniors and seniors. During the first quarter, swimming, exercise equipment, sand volleyball, wallyball, and other activities are available at the Recreation Center. During the second and third quarters the students are involved in bowling at the Cedar Bowl. During the fourth quarter, activities include golf, fishing and gymnasium sports.

Students must pay their own fees and are responsible for providing their own fishing license and equipment. A weekly fee may be $2 and up.

Yearbook Students learn the use of the Pagemaker program for Macintosh computer to prepare camera ready pages for publication of the yearbook. Students will be required to complete assigned pages within deadlines. They will learn computer preparation, story and caption writing, picture cropping, and paste up of pages for the yearbook. Students are required to meet all deadlines.

Swing Choir ~ No Credit ~ Extracurricular

Swing Choir is an extracurricular activity. From auditions in the spring, a group of singers (approximately 20) are selected. Students are responsible for paying for Swing Choir outfit. Swing Choir meets after school on Monday, Wednesday and Friday until 4:00 p.m. with an occasional Sunday night rehearsal. The emphasis in on singing, dancing, and being able to "get along" as a group. Swing Choir performs at all three annual school concerts, two contests and a spring tour along with various other private functions. Enrollment in chorus is a prerequisite to membership in Swing Choir. Swing Choir is open to students grades 9-12.

English ~ Full Credit ~ Required

The curriculum of this class includes the study of the history and development of British literature from the Anglo-Saxon time period up to and including the works of various 20th century authors. Activities include reading from various genres--short story, drama, novel and poetry, class discussions, monthly book reports and writing of various types--essays, a 4-6 page research paper, and a 4-6 page comparison essay. A 70% average is required to pass based upon homework, quizzes, tests, and written work.

Government ~ Full Credit ~ Required

American Government is designed to acquaint students with the structure and functions of government, not only on the federal but also state level. Students will experience an in-depth study of Congress, the Presidency, and the Judiciary branches of government. Other units explore different forms of government, the development of democracy, capitalism, and civil rights. Included are many independent units based on chapters in the text and testing over those units.

Weekly current event quizzes are also part of the study of American Government based upon two days publication of the North Platte Telegraph. Class lectures, discussions, and guest speakers accompany major units. Evaluation is based upon homework, current events, tests and quizzes.

Theology ~ Full Credit ~ Required

First Semester senior theology is a study of faith. We explore its origins and possibilities and the many choices involved with being a Christian in today's world. Second Semester is spent on relationships and sexual values. A pamphlet/videotape format is used.

Each student is required to keep a prayer journal and read "current Christian events" for weekly discussions. Grades are determined through journals, tests, projects, service hours, book reports and class discussion.

Accounting II ~ Full Credit ~ Elective

Accounting II is a continuation of Accounting I. It is designed to refine and strengthen as well as expand on the principles learned previously. Some areas covered include Departmental Accounting, Accrued Income and Expenses, Notes Payable and Receivable, and Corporate Accounting. A "B" average in Accounting I and a desire to work hard to achieve the required goals would be prerequisites for this class.

Adult Living ~ Full Credit ~ Elective

Adult Living is a progressive course designed to take the student through careers, finances, courtship and marriage, sexuality, childbirth, and the care of newborn. Investments, home design, and projects involving landscape architecture, wiring, and plumbing etc, are covered in the third quarter. The last quarter is devoted to kitchen safety, planning balanced and healthy meals, and cooking techniques. Grades are based upon homework, quizzes, and the large projects required each quarter. A $10 fee is required for the class to cover the costs of purchased groceries consumed by the students during the cooking portion of class.

Anatomy & Physiology ~ Full Credit ~ Elective

This course does not require background in chemistry, physics or biology. However, it is strongly recommended that either Biology I or Chemistry be taken previously. It is a lab-science, and experiments and dissections will be required. This course is a must for anyone planning to enter any medically related field.

Extensive study of the body as a whole begins the year, covering body chemistry, organization, cells, tissues, and the skin. Students then make an intensive study of the skeletal system including formation and articulations. The year continues with an in-depth review of the Central Nervous System, Spinal Nerves, and the Cranial Nerves. The body's transportation is investigated in studying the blood and cardiovascular system. Finally, in connection with a six week dissection of a fetal pig, the digestive, reproductive and muscular systems are reviewed.

Each week a current science article is submitted and highlighted by each student. A career paper, which studies a specific medical career and the college requirements necessary to attain it, is done in the fall semester. Along with the paper the student arranges a field trip or speaker to present information on that career. During the third quarter, a current medical novel is reviewed and a report is given which stresses how medical facts help to develop the plot of the novel. Evaluation includes 60% based upon homework and 40% based upon tests.

Art - Full Credit - Elective

Senior Art students, like Junior Art, is an independent Study class. At this level the class meet less often weekly so the amount of work required is adjusted. The requirements for success in this class are the same as Junior with the exception of Craftsmanship. It is expected that each student will be more proficient at their chosen medium and will be evaluated accordingly.

Art Appreciation - Full Credit HS & 3 College Credits This is a College Freshmen level General Studies Art Class. It is offered through the Mid Plains Community College in North Platte. this is the academic study of Art through the ages. The syllabus and material used for the instruction of the class is taught during the normal instructional week at St. Patrick's High School. Each student, upon successful completion or the class will earn one full High School Credit and three Credit Hours of College work.

Business Law includes the study of the history of law, the present system of courts, law for minors and contract law. Students will be asked to study actual court cases and authentic legal problems presented in understandable language. The text also presents specific materials on ethics and raises questions about right and wrong conduct in business and society.

This course will combine knowledge and practice of drama techniques to create artistic achievement. Proficiency will be demonstrated through play production at the contest level. The course will also include in-depth study of different types of speech and interpretation. The last quarter will concentrate on interpersonal communication which is the importance of communication in the company of others as a basic human need. Contest work is required and non-school time practice will be necessary (and is a component of the evaluation process). Post World War II and Vietnam is designed to cover more fully American History from World War II to the present day. Emphasis is placed on the Vietnam conflict and how America became involved in our longest war. An understanding not only of the war but also for the Vietnam veteran is fostered. Activities include speakers, book reports, major topic reports and magazine articles from the 1960's and 1970's. A key part of the class is the visual material based upon the PBS Vietnam series. Tests and reports account for 50% of the grade with homework, speakers and articles making up the other 50%.
